DELTA

Stop the delta water grab

Opinion
By Jane Wagner-Tyack/Barbara Barrigan-Parilla
From SF Chronicle - Tuesday, March 13, 2012

Coalition response...California, without a doubt, faces big water supply challenges now and in the future. What is critical is that a rational approach is taken to do our best to meet the water supply needs of people in urban areas, all of California's farms and the environment. H.R. 1837 demonstrates the level of frustration many people feel over California water policy. Sen. Dianne Feinstein has said she will look at the bill and see what elements will be useful to move the public debate forward and I think she is sincere.

Meeting agriculture's water supply needs is important for farmers throughout California, including the Sacramento and San Joaquin valleys, the Delta region, Central Coast and Southern California. All regions have their unique challenges, which makes finding a solution so daunting. Finger pointing and name-calling won't bring one fish to the system. Misguided water supply cuts will further California's unemployment, whether they're in Redding, the Delta or the San Joaquin Valley. Water has been the backbone of California's economy since the Gold Rush and attempts to pit one part of the state against another hurts everyone in the end.
