September is Salmon Month, come join us!

From SF Chronicle – Aug. 31, 2010

By Zeke Grader

I know a good thing when I see it, and FarmAid was a good thing. It raised awareness about the plight of family farmers and ranchers… Today, another group of independent family-owned enterprises needs help – salmon fishermen.

Coalition viewpoint…Critics of farm water continue to beat the drum that water flowing through the Delta that is delivered to San Joaquin Valley farms is the major cause of the Delta’s environmental and fishery problems. Consider---

1. Recent scientific studies, two this year, point to a greater problem…ammonium discharges into Delta waters that rob the Delta of needed food supplies for fish.

2. Federal panels are also pointing to fluctuating temperatures in the ocean as a greater cause of salmon depletion.

3. Striped bass prey on juvenile salmon as they make their way through the Delta.

Also, those “corporate” farmers this author refers to in the western San Joaquin Valley are family farmers. Decisions on how to run the farm are made by family members and not individuals sitting around a conference table hundreds of miles away.
