Water supply

Coalition response...The author's proposal to rewrite the pricing structure for California
water fails to accurately reflect how water pricing actually works in
California. It is important to understand that water costs are based on the
cost of delivery. Those costs are calculated based on the amount of
infrastructure and energy required to transport the water from its origin to
its final point of use. In the case of urban water, it must be treated to meet
drinking water quality standards, stored, and pressurized to make it available
to every customer 24-hours a day. Farm water does not undergo the same
treatment, which means to cost to provide it is much lower in most cases. The
author attempts to place all water costs on an equal basis when that kind of
equality simply does not exist.
The author also does not mention that
farmers receiving water from California's State Water Project are contractually
locked in to paying for their full share of water regardless of how much water
is delivered. This year they will only receive 60% of their contracted supply
but will be required to write checks as if they received their full share.

Coalition response...There is no debate regarding the sincerity of the author's viewpoints
regarding her family farm. However, her characterization of farms along the
west side of the San Joaquin Valley as owned "by a handful of corporate
mega-farmers" is simply not true. Most of the farms are owned by families
just like hers and some of them, like hers, have also farmed the same land for
150 years. Such name-calling is a distortion of the truth and a misguided
attempt to distort public opinion. Actions like that are destructive at a time
when California needs to come together to resolve its water supply challenges.
