California’s water wars: It isn’t fish vs. farmers
Opinion
By Doug Obegi
From LA Times – Wednesday, Aug. 10, 2011
Coalition response...Farmers would also like “scientifically sound solutions” to our water delivery problems but not the science that Obegi and others are championing. The science used to develop the biological opinions that regulate water deliveries from the Delta have been called “arbitrary and capricious,” as well as “silly” in a federal judge’s ruling that ordered federal fish agencies to rewrite the guidelines.
Obegi’s comparison of water exports during the recent drought with 1987-92 is false. According to the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, Delta exports from both the State and federal pumps during 2007-2009 totaled 11.65 MAF for an average of 3.88 MAF. The numbers from 1987-92 total 27.79 MAF and average 4.94 MAF.
Not only do we need science that is not silly to solve our water delivery dilemma but we also need numbers that are true.
