Coalition response... California law requires co-equal goals when it comes to our water
supply. That means restoring the Delta ecosystem and creating a more reliable
water supply for California, not one over the other. We can do both. Water
that would be moved by a "peripheral canal," or tunnel, is water that
is already accounted for to grow food on California farms. It's not new water
and not someone else's water. Without reliable farm water supplies, consumers
are at risk of higher prices at the grocery store, fewer local food choices, or
both. In addition, the alternative to California fresh fruit and produce
is food coming from other countries that may not have the same pesticide and
food safety standards that we have in California. And 92 percent of California
farms are family owned and operated; small businesses that provide 1 in 10 jobs
in the state and $34 billion in farm products.
It's important to understand all
of the facts when it comes to water supply, food production and our
environment. Families throughout California and across the country depend on
farmers to grow the food they eat. Making sure farmers have the water they need
to grow that food is important to all of us...three times a day.
