Water supply
Letter

Coalition response...This
letter incorrectly claims that Westside farmers are seeking some sort of unfair
taxpayer bailout. Nothing could be further from the truth. It is
the federal government that made promises to provide drainage service to this
farmland that the courts are now enforcing. And claiming that farmers are
somehow getting special treatment and “unfettered access to publicly subsidized
federal water” is laughable. The reliability of Central Valley Project
water has dropped from 90 percent in the late 1980’s to about 50 percent or
less today due to scientifically unsupported cutbacks.
The fact is, 92 percent of California farms are owned and operated by family farmers. Because some of them choose to incorporate is strictly a business decision and has nothing to do with their commitment to the land and their ability to provide food for consumers. Farmers provide 10 percent of all California jobs and economic benefits during these stressful times.
