Delta
Letter
From Modesto Bee - Sunday, July 15, 2012
Coalition response...Letter-writer Jerry Cadagan should know better than to try and convince
people that the current conveyance proposals through the Delta are the same as
put to the voters in 1982. The current proposal calls for a "dual
conveyance" that continues to send water through the Delta for fish,
wildlife and area farmers. While mentioning the congressional letter, he fails
to reference the letter signed from 14 California business leaders who urged
the continued efforts of the BDCP. He also conveniently omits the letter from
Sens. Feinstein and Boxer who echoed that call. Also Dr. Jerry Sunding of UC
Berkeley, another respected economist, recently reported to the Delta
Stewardship Council on the benefits of completing a conveyance project.
Presenting one-sided opinions
does not help committed efforts to secure a water future for all of California.
Editorial
From Mercury News - Friday, July 13, 2012
Coalition response...The concern expressed by this editorial for levees that protect a fresh
water supply from the Delta for the Silicon Valley is well placed. However, it
is important to not overlook the value of maintaining a viable water supply
both in the Delta and to other areas of the State. Family farmers throughout
California use the water that flows into and through the Delta to produce an
affordable food supply that we all enjoy. A failure of Delta levees and
subsequent invasion of salt water would have far-reaching effects on all
California and not just the Silicon Valley. That's why efforts to achieve the
co-equal goals of a reliable water supply and restored Delta ecosystem are so
important.
Fisheries
Q&A
By Matt Weiser
From Sacramento Bee - Monday, July 16, 2012
Coalition response...Salmon go through natural increases and decreases in population
regularly. A look at the Sacramento River fall Chinook Index reveals that
salmon populations peaked in 1988, 1995 and again in 2002 with corresponding
decreases during the intervening years. The recent salmon population increase
was not unexpected because it follows the same 7-8 year trend we have seen
before.
State/federal fishery managers
increasingly agree on the importance of ocean conditions and the impact on
salmon numbers. Individuals and organizations who continue to beat the worn-out
drum that Delta pumps are at fault are being overshadowed by scientific reports
that state otherwise.
