Coalition response...Court documents filed by federal fish agencies in support of the
biological opinion to protect salmon in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta cited
the dependence of Orcas on salmon as a food supply. They claimed without the
protections offered by the environmental regulation the Orca would suffer. It
is these agencies that made the connection between Orcas and salmon and used
that reasoning to restrict delivery of water through the Delta to farmers and
25 million Californians. Thousands of farmworkers were forced out of their jobs
and impacts to the overall communities reached almost $1 billion because of the
reduced water deliveries. This is tragic when no evidence exists to indicate
that these whales are any different or more endangered than the rest of the
world's animal species.
