Story
From UCLA Today - Wednesday, Aug. 24, 2011
(The following response is posted to the above newspaper stories.)
Coalition response...Efforts by UCLA researchers to determine the stability of levees built on peat soils in the Delta will provide valuable information as water users look to protect the Delta ecosystem and secure a reliable supply of water. As the researchers admit, more study needs to be done. Realizing that the levee that was subject to the testing was built by the researchers, further questions need to be answered, such as: What happens when a levee that has been holding back water for years undergoes similar tests? Or what would happen if a levee that has been subject to natural forces---tunneling rodents and erosion---is tested? We look forward to the results of the continued research.

WATER SUPPLY
Story
from City Journal - Summer 2011
California's water wars aren't about scarcity. Even with 37 million people and the nation's most irrigation-intensive agriculture, the state usually has enough water for both people and crops, thanks to the brilliant hydrological engineering of past generations of Californians.
DELTA
Editorial
From Chico Enterprise-Record - Friday, Aug. 26, 2011
As the state prepares its latest promised monumental water plan and the courts continue to weigh in, the north state is going on the offensive by playing a little self-defense. Just in case the state wants to pick winners and losers in the water wars, north state farmers are wisely trying to state their case.
Unhealthy Delta degrades water system
Opinion
By John Foley, MWD Chairman
From Orange County Register - Thursday, Aug. 25, 2011
Orange County has much at stake as the process to solve California's largest water problem heads into the home stretch toward a historic solution. The problem is 400-some miles away in Northern California's Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta.

Wine vs. Salmon: Water Wars Hit Sonoma County
Story
From Bay Citizen - Thursday, Aug. 25, 2011
The dense forests of redwood, oak and Douglas fir that once covered much of Sonoma County have for many decades been giving way to pastures, orchards, subdivisions - and vineyards. Now, those vineyards are emerging as yet another threat to a fish that would go just perfectly with the region's signature pinot noir: the coho salmon.

A delicate balance: Hydropower and salmon in a changing climate
Press release
From Stockholm Environment Institute - Tuesday, Aug. 23, 2011
Coalition response...Excuse us, but making the case that hydropower operations are a significant factor in salmon survivability is nothing more than a red herring. It is now generally accepted that the major impediments to salmon survivability are invasive species that compete for food, non-native predators in the Delta including bass that consume baby salmon by the millions, and tons of ammonium dumped into the Delta ecosystem everyday in the form of wastewater discharges. In comparison, upstream restoration activities already completed in the Sacramento and San Joaquin valleys have largely eliminated the impacts on salmon by water diversion facilities.

Water supply
Editorial
From Riverside Press-Enterprise – Monday, Aug. 22, 2011
Coalition response...This editorial does a good job in describing the importance of an improved water delivery system through the Delta to the people of California and the need to place the highest priority to this effort. It is not just the millions of acres of farmland that will receive an improved water supply reliability and the food and jobs resulting from that water, it is also the more than 25 million Californians that rely upon it for their drinking supplies. There is no doubt that the benefits will touch every resident of California by a wise investment in repairing the State’s broken water system.

Delta
State must achieve a Delta water solution
Editorial
From Fresno Bee – Friday, Aug. 19, 2011
Coalition response...This editorial gets it right, yet some critics will claim that fixing the Delta is nothing but a water grab and does not truly benefit California. They are wrong. Protecting the Delta’s ecosystem and securing a reliable water supply benefits our entire state. While water is delivered southward from the Delta to San Joaquin Valley farmers and cities and also Southern California, residents in the San Francisco east bay and south through Santa Clara and San Benito counties also benefit.
The result of this water flow not only provides the drinking supply for 25 million Californians but it also spurs production of millions of dollars of farm commodities and manufactured goods. As bad as our state’s economy is today, imagine what it would be like without the production spurred by California’s water supply.
Brown reaffirms support for Delta-killing peripheral canal
Blog
By Dan Bacher
From IndyBay Media – Friday, Aug. 19, 2011
Coalition response...A process with goals to restore the Delta’s ecosystem and provide a reliable supply of water benefits all of California and not one region over another---that is the goal of the Delta Stewardship Council. Gov. Brown made his recent remarks based on the ongoing efforts of the Council. A true restoration of the Delta’s ecosystem is a primary goal of the Council but critics of these efforts continue to focus on conveyance as a threat to the Delta. These critics do not want to “restore” the Delta, they simply want to keep it the way it is.
