Coalition response...Court documents filed by federal fish agencies in support of the biological opinion to protect salmon in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta cited the dependence of Orcas on salmon as a food supply. They claimed without the protections offered by the environmental regulation the Orca would suffer. It is these agencies that made the connection between Orcas and salmon and used that reasoning to restrict delivery of water through the Delta to farmers and 25 million Californians. Thousands of farmworkers were forced out of their jobs and impacts to the overall communities reached almost $1 billion because of the reduced water deliveries. This is tragic when no evidence exists to indicate that these whales are any different or more endangered than the rest of the world's animal species.
