Shared sacrifice in the Delta takes a holiday

Coalition viewpoint... The 1970’s mantra “The solution to pollution is dilution” didn’t work then and it doesn’t work now. The Bee seems to think others should contribute the Delta flows needed to dilute Sacramento-area pollution by further reducing exports. Further export reductions aren’t the answer because the changing estuary and declining native fish populations aren’t benefitting from this misguided approach that dates back to the 1990s.
Contrary to comments in the editorial, San Joaquin Valley farmers have spent 10 years developing a successful drainage management program. This investment has essentially reduced drainage water from the project area into the San Joaquin River to zero. Efforts like that are good for the environment and they’re the right things to do.
It’s time to realize that changes in the basic chemistry of the Delta is a major part of the problem. Emerging science recognizes that fact, both here and in other estuaries around the world. If the Sacramento region were truly interested in doing the right things to help the Bay-Delta then they would be willing to look at every possible cause and stop blaming others for a problem that is their responsibility.
