Southwestern water outlook getting grimmer, scientists say

California and the entire southwestern U.S. must drastically reduce water use to prevent harm to urban areas, agriculture and wildlife, according to scientific studies published Tuesday.
Coalition viewpoint...Significantly missing from the study is the need to develop new water supplies and an improved water delivery system. Conservation and continued water use efficiency will play important roles in the future to free up a part of the existing water supply but not enough to offset increased demand from a growing population and businesses that drive the economy. Other studies and individuals agree that additional water supplies are available but storage facilities are needed to make this new supply available at the time of need. The existing infrastructure is outdated and must be modernized.
