Special interests threaten salmon fisheries
Forum
from SF Chronicle – Thursday, Dec. 2, 2010
By Rep. Jackie Speier
Coalition viewpoint...Omitted as a cause of salmon decline is warm water temperatures in the ocean that depletes the salmon food supply. This factor is identified by federal fish agencies as the leading cause of he dwindling salmon population. Also omitted is another leading factor---the presence of predator fish in the Delta, such as the striped bass, which feed on juvenile salmon on their way to the ocean. Wastewater discharge into the delta with high levels of ammonium are also identified as damaging Delta fish. The author fails to recognize that in times of drought, all water users experience a drop in supplies, including farmers.
According to an April 2010 study by UOP’s Dr. Jeffrey Michael, impacts to the salmon industry total 1,823 jobs and $118.4 million, not the inflated numbers suggested by the author. Read Michael’s report here.
Westlands, San Luis water authority are connected
Blog
from Fresno Bee – Wednesday, Dec. 1, 2010
Coalition viewpoint...Another clarification is needed. Despite the claim---“ The Chronicle's description made it sound like the water authority is a separate entity from Westlands. They are not.”---these two entities are separate decision-making bodies. While some may “argue that Westlands is the major player in the San Luis & Delta-Mendota authority,” they only receive one vote when it comes to making decisions. Other member districts have the same voting power as Westlands. The decision by the Authority to withdraw from further funding for BDCP was approved by a majority of its members and was not determined by Westlands. Likewise, the Authority does not make the decisions relating to Westlands policy.
