Water demands traced to agriculture, not population growth

Coalition response...Claims of potentially saving millions of acre-feet of water in agriculture have been disproven by irrigation specialists from UC and Cal State universities. People and groups who make these claims do so without fully understanding how farmers use water. Researcher Ellen Hanak from the Public Policy Institute of California stated this week at the California Irrigation Institute’s annual conference that ag conservation will not create much “new” water. She understands the issue; too bad others refuse to learn.
Reducing exports from the Delta to keep more water flowing through the estuary is not the answer to restoring fish and habitat. Annual Delta inflows have averaged 20.3 maf from 2000-2009. The annual average for exports during this same year is 19.6%. In 2006 when inflow totaled 50.8 maf, exports equaled only 10%. Even in years when there is more water that remains in the Delta, fish and habitat continue to be impacted by other stressors than just exports, as recognized last week by the Independent Science Board to the Delta Stewardship Council.

I believe in a fair and open debate, but stealing my website clothing – with my name at the top! – seems a little shabby to me.
ReplyDeleteMy mistake. My name appeared at the top of your site because I was logged on to blogspot. And I didn't know we had chosen the same background!
