Brown’s water chief wants Delta water diverted to Southern California
Story
From Contra Costa Times – Friday, Feb. 4, 2011
Coalition response...Jerry Meral is taking a balanced approach to California’s water infrastructure. His comments indicate he is looking for a solution in the Delta that includes reliable water supplies and a restored ecosystem. While in the past he has expressed support for a Peripheral Canal, he recognizes the ongoing process with the BDCP must be allowed to move forward to come to a Delta solution. Yet, there will be some in the water community who will continue to cry “wolf” and oppose any effort that might lead to a Peripheral Canal. They will claim that Meral is “betraying” his environmental background and refuse to acknowledge that the task Meral is on is leading toward a Delta solution that will benefit all of California.
Sacramento River Salmon Run: Nowhere Near Normal or Recovered

Coalition response...Statements continue to be made that present only some of the facts. This author points to export pumping as the cause for salmon decline in the Delta. He ignores the science that names predation by striped bass as salmon swim through the Delta on their way to the ocean; warm water temperatures in the ocean that has depleted salmon food supply; and adverse effects on Delta water quality from wastewater discharges. Also, the author perpetuates the myth of “junior water rights holders” that simply do not exist. Water supply contracts with users are individual documents that do not include any reference to a ranking for delivery that the author and others would have the public to believe.
