We must band together to stop the Delta water raid

Opinion

By Barbara Barrigan-Parrilla

From The Record – Saturday, June 4, 2011

Coalition response...Special interest groups such as Restore the Delta severely criticized the BDCP process for “not allowing them to participate.” Now that the process has been opened to these special interest groups they are claiming a lack of capability to formally participate as study group members, instead opting to submit their comments through the public forum process. This is too bad for the objective of completing a habitat plan for the Delta that will protect its ecosystem. Hopefully those who are serious about participating in the study groups will move forward and not be delayed by comments that appear to be intended more to obstruct progress than find real solutions to the Delta’s problems.

Coalition response...Biologists recognize that conditions this year have resulted in the larger population numbers. These larger numbers have also proven why the splittail has been rejected for protection of the Endangered Species Act. The individuals concerned with the large take numbers at the pumps should realize that an improved conveyance (canal or tunnels) in the Delta would provide increased protection for fish taken at the pumps.
